US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said the government is not looking at bailing out Silicon Valley Bank, the sixteenth largest in the country, after it was shut down by US regulators on Friday.
Authorities said they were worried about the banks liquidity after it lost money while selling assets. The concerns prompted the bank's depositers, mainly tech companies, to rush to withdraw funds sparking fears over the wider banking sector.
British finance minister Jeremy Hunt said the bank's failure poses a serious risk for the technology and life science sectors in the UK.

The Silicon Valley Bank just collapsed.

Silicon Valley Bank ($SIVB) was the 18th largest bank in the U.S. They did business with 50% of all US VC-backed startups while their deposits tripled from 2019-2021.

SVB was named one of America’s Best Banks by Forbes just 3 days before everything exploded.

In a nutshell, they had a massive influx of deposits, which they had to invest. However, SVB didn’t have the capacity to make loans at the same rate as the deposit inflow.

SVB decided to purchase more than $80 BILLION worth of mortgage-backed securities. 97% of those had a 10+ year duration with a weighted average yield of only 1.56%.

HSBC has agreed to buy the UK arm of collapsed US Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), bringing relief to UK tech firms who warned they could go bust without help.

Customers and businesses who have money deposited in SVB UK will be able to access it as well as other banking services as normal.

The Treasury said the deal with HSBC involved no taxpayer money and the Bank of England said deposits were secure.

HSBC said it paid just £1 for the SVB's UK arm after it failed on Friday.

SpaceX launched its mega rocket Starship on Saturday, but lost the booster and then the spacecraft minutes into the test flight.

The booster had sent the rocketship toward space, but communication was lost eight minutes after liftoff from South Texas and SpaceX declared that the vehicle had failed.

The trouble cropped up as the ship’s engines were almost done firing to put it on an around-the-world path. Minutes earlier, the booster exploded, but not until its job was done, putting the ship on a course toward space.

At 400 feet, Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built.

The first test flight in April ended in an explosion soon after liftoff.
